Finding A Good Yoga Instructor Is Key

Yoga is a great way to get relaxed and to get into shape. People of all ages are getting into yoga. But for yoga to be most effective you need to find a good yoga instructor.

To find a good yoga instructor you should start with your local health club. Ask them if they have yoga classes or provide other yoga training, such as private yoga lessons. Pay a visit to a yoga class and watch how the instructor interacts with the students.

Interview Candidates

Interview your potential yoga instructor. Ask him or her how long they have been practicing yoga. Question them on how many times a week they practice yoga themselves, not including teaching. You want to find someone who is actively practicing yoga to improve their skills.

Ask your potential yoga instructor if he or she teaches somewhere else. The instructors that also teach at established yoga studios are usually very good at their job.

Yoga Alliance

You can always ask if your yoga instructor is registered by the Yoga Alliance. Not all good instructors will be registered. But if your instructor is registered with the Yoga Alliance you an be certain that he or she had to pass strict standards of practice to be registered.

It is a good idea to observe a class before you sign up. Listen to how the instructor explains the different moves and poses. A good instructor will speak clearly and loudly. He or she will be able to clearly convey what is expected of the students.

Watch The Instructor Giving A Class

A good yoga instructor will move about the room during a class. He or she will check the students for the proper yoga poses. The instructor should make adjustments to the student's poses if he or she is doing it wrong.

When observing a yoga class, keep in mind that a good instructor will always ask the students if they have any injuries or conditions that may limit mobility. This is important because the instructor may need to modify certain poses to compensate for the injury.

A good yoga instructor should be able to execute all yoga poses without difficulty. This is especially true of the beginners yoga class. If the yoga instructor is having trouble executing or holding the poses, this will tell you that he or she is not actively practicing yoga. This may not be the best instructor to learn from.

Word of mouth is a great way to find a good yoga instructor. Ask around the workplace or ask friends if they have any good recommendations for a yoga instructor. If the same name keeps popping up over and over, chances are this instructor is pretty good.

Finding a good yoga instructor may take a little time. But spending the time to find a good yoga instructor is worth it if you want to get the greatest benefits possible from your yoga classes

The Pilates Method of exercise is a popular form of exercise that was developed by German-born Joseph Pilates in the 1920s.

It emphasizes a balanced evolution the body's development by combining mind and body work through a controlled sequence of movement. According to www.pilatesinsights.com, Joseph Pilates developed these movements based on his experiences with yoga, Zen meditation, martial arts, and other fitness techniques. Many dancers soon became avid practitioners and displayed the benefits of Pilates’ method through their fluid movements. Regular practice and mastery of the technique stretches, strengthens, and tones muscle, improves posture, flexibility, and balance, and unites mind and body. Almost nine decades later, the benefits of Pilates continue to be recognized by people who want to take a more controlled low-impact approach to fitness.

The Benefits Are Many

The benefits of Pilates are many, and through continued patience and dedication, movements can be mastered and the benefits clearly defined. In addition to the benefits of Pilates mentioned above, regular practice of the method builds a strong, long, and lean body core using deep abdominal muscles. Pilates movements also reduce stress and tension, increase energy, improve circulation and range of motion, and strengthen the spine improving flexibility, which promotes back health and recovery from injury. The benefits of Pilates matwork emphasizes the point that the body is the only tool needed to achieve physical fitness. There really is not need to exercise full speed ahead and possibly cause injury to your body. The old adage, “no pain no gain” is simply not true. A good work out does not have to leave you exhausted and sore.

Popularity Increased With Yoga And Tai Chi

The benefits of Pilates was again resurrected with a resurgance in popularity along side yoga, tae chi, meditation, and turning the focus toward safer and more sensible forms of exercise and total body fitness. Joseph Pilates said, “Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.” This is another example of the benefits of Pilates; mental and spiritual health gained through controlled mind/body movements that increase blood flow and improve circulation throughout the body. The entire body functions better with regular exercise; endorphins are released that improve out mood and outlook on life. Pilates is not just a passing fad, it has been proven to be effective and beneficial to people of all ages. Joseph Pilates also said, “In ten sessions you will feel the difference, and in thirty you’ll have a whole new body.” I can attest that you will start feeling more toned after only three sessions, so go ahead and experience the benefits of Pilates for yourself!

Aerobic Exercise Is Easier to Work Into Your Schedule Than You'd Think

Regular aerobic activity should be included into everyone’s daily routine to strengthen the heart and lungs and make them work more efficiently.

truly is one of the most important things you can do to improve your health. Aerobic activity can include running, walking, stair climbing, dancing, swimming, using a treadmill, Stairmaster, NordicTrac, or other gym machine or any number of other activities that get the heart working harder for a continuous period of time. Many people may feel that they need to have a regimented work out program, and if they do not have at least thirty minutes to an hour to devote that they can’t do it. This is simply not true, and in fact, this type of mentality hinders their progress and keeps them from getting into shape with regular exercise. Short bursts of aerobic activity can be fit in throughout the day. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, take a brisk walk around the building at lunch time, ride a bike or walk to work if within a reasonable distance, or park further away to get a short walk in.

The benefits of aerobic activity are many, and everyone of all ages should be encouraged to engage in regular exercise. Even if there are chronic health conditions present, regular aerobic activity is recommended by physicians to alleviate them and they can be tailored to fit the individual’s needs. A health care provider should be consulted before beginning any type of exercise program, and for people who are grossly overweight or have high blood pressure, your doctor might recommend a stress test. This simply is like having an electro-cardiogram test administered while you are on a treadmill. The physician monitors how strong your heart is at different speeds and determines if it is safe for you to begin a regular exercise program. If excessive shortness of breath or chest pain occurs, then the activity will be modified to a level that enables you to safely do the exercise and build up your heart's strength gradually.

Always Start Slowly

Every aerobic exrcise activity should start with a five-minute warming up or stretching period to loosen up your muscles and get the blood flowing. Then follow with a thirty-minute period where you pick up the pace and do your serious exercise. After the thirty minutes you should take another five minutes to cool off. If you don't loosen up first and wind down slowly at the end, you're more likely to suffer an injury like a pulled muscle or groin injury

Starting out at a slower pace is recommended for all beginners anyway until some tolerance is built up, which will happen over time with regular aerobic activity. A work out does not necessarily have to strenuous to be effective. The old adage “no pain no gain” is simply not true, in fact it is quite the opposite. The best rule of thumb is that if you're doing your exercise and you are so winded that you can't carry on a conversation, then slow down! You're overdoing it. And the more you exercise and start getting into shape, the longer, faster, and more strenuous the exercise can be. However, it is normal for someone who has never exercised or done so infrequently to experience some slight discomfort after beginning a work out program, but these symptoms will dissipate as you get into shape.

Monitor Your Heart Rate During Exercise

Regular aerobic activity should put the heart in the cardio target zone, which is computed by subtracting your age from 220. Then multiply this number by 85%, and that is the top threshold that your heart rate should be when you exercise. So if you're fifty years old, 170 is the maximum heart rate your heart can endure, and the target rate for you when you are in top shape should be 85% of 170, or 145 beats per minute. Any faster than that would be too much. Beginners should only work out at 70-75% their target heart rate until their bodies become more accustomed to higher aerobic activity levels. You can buy a portable heart rate monitor for about $100. The meter is strapped onto your wrist like a watch. I have a good one made by Pulsar.

Now's The Time To Start

Any amount of aerobic activity is better than nothing, so get moving! No excuses!

Yoga History

Yoga is a practice of health, exercise and meditation, and the history of yoga dates back thousands of years. Its origins were in India and Pakistan, where it was viewed not only as a form of exercise but as a path to spiritual growth.Today, it's popularity is on the upswing.

Popularity Is Increasing

The number of yoga classes being offered in each community is exploding.

Most gyms hold yoga classes as do YMCAs and free standing exercise classes. Increasingly, there are yoga studios popping up that specialize in teaching yoga practices to the students in an intensive manner. These usually are more expensive than the classes at the local gym or "Y." This is because the benefits of yoga are extraordinary. There are physical, emotional and mental benefits to these exercises, positions and routines.

Yoga Fitness Benefits

Yoga should be taught by trained experts to the beginner so that there are minimal risks of physical injury and torn muscles. One of the significant physical benefits is the increased flexibility that practitioners experience. Yoga positions act upon various joints and include many that are off the radar in more routine exercise patterns. Through increased flexibility and motion the joints also increase the lubrication of the ligaments and tendons. In research that has investigated the yoga positions researchers have found that seemingly non-strenuous positions will act upon other parts of the body in an interrelated manner.

Yoga works with the body to improve toning of the muscles. Muscles that have become flaccid or weak are stimulated with repeated motion and strengthening moves. Much of the movement that stimulates stretching and strengthening also improves the blood supply to the muscles and organs of the body. This additional blood supply helps to flush out toxins and provides nourishment to the cells.

Yoga Heightens Awareness

Another yoga benefit in an exercise routine is the increased sense of awareness that the individual attains. They are often able to detect changes that indicate a changing health disorder or infection that will enable them to take corrective action more quickly.

Some of the other physiological benefits of yoga include stabilizing the autonomic nervous system and pulse rate through meditation; respiratory rate decreases, blood pressure decreases, cardiovascular function improves, dexterity skills improve and reaction time improves. People who practice yoga also find that their respiratory efficiency improves, their posture becomes more erect and their weight normalizes. People report better sleep habits, increased endurance and increased energy levels with a better integration of body parts function.

Yoga Produces Better Mood Swings

Individuals who begin to practice yoga exercises also report that they have better moods and less mood swings. They also report better social adjustment, improved concentration, improved memory and better attention span. Practitioners find that their hostility decreases, their ability to learn improves and their depth perception also improves.

Reduces Stress

Yoga practitioners also report mental benefits that include a more calm attitude that is carried with them throughout the day. Concentration on the body functions during yoga poses increases the ability of the practitioner to meditate and disengage their thoughts which helps to calm the mind. This also leads to greater reduction in stress and a reduced number of disorders that are related to stress such as anxiety and weight gain.

There are numerous yoga benefits for the mind and the body. These benefits translate to improved health, flexibility and a calmer mind and spirit. Those who practice yoga find that they are able to maintain a normal weight with less effort and have less trouble with joint conditions such as arthritis. And to make matters even better, once you learn basic yoga, you can practice iit at home if you don't have time to go to a yoga class or the weather is inclement. All you need is your yoga mat!
