Some Herbal Remedies Can Be Harmful During Pregnancy

Herbal medicine has been practiced for thousands of years around the world, and has almost attained mainstream popularity. Nearly one third of Americans have used herbal treatments or some other forms of alternative medicine.

felt insecure all the time about my appearance. I was practically afraid to leave the house.

Of course, feelings of insecurity are a common part of adolescence. It's a difficult period of one's life. The body is changing, different hormones are racing through the blood stream. Suddenly, the adult world, the real world, doesn't seem so far away. And of course, for the first time I was noticing girls, who were becoming women!

It was just that which made the acne problems so embarrassing. My friends, most of whom were also guys, didn't really care if I had acne or not. To them, all that mattered was that I still hung out to ride bikes and play video games and pickup football. But with the girls, it was another matter. It's just hard to feel confident at that age as it is, and even harder when you're not confident about your appearance.

At first, I used cleansers and exfoliants, but these only seemed to make the problem worse. I'd put on the cleanser and the skin would turn red and dry, and begin to peel. Now even the parts of my skin without acne looked puffy and irritated!

Mom Finally Took Me To See A Dermatologist

I begged my mom to take me to the doctor, but she insisted I was fine just the way I was. I sure didn't feel fine. Finally, she took me into the dermatologist. She barely looked at me, and handed me a prescription for my acne problem – a cream which I was supposed to put on my face. I took this to mean that it was a miracle cure-all, so effective in treating acne that it was obviously the right choice for everybody. And it did start working, almost immediately, but after a couple days, my skin problems were back, as bad as ever. I began to despair of ever finding a cure for my acne problem.

Nutrition's Role In Controlling Acne

The strange thing is that, in all this time, no one had ever told me about the roll of nutrition in both causing and preventing acne. Fortunately, I had a friend who's mother was a nutritionist. Almost overnight when she was thirteen, she developed terrible acne – even worse than mine. Then, a week later, as if by magic, it was almost completely gone. I asked her what was her secret, and she told me – it was as simple as avoiding greasy foods, and eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. I was skeptical at first, but I figured it was workth trying.

I eliminated all unhealthy foods from my diet. It took longer than I would have thought, but I stuck with it. Within a month, my acne problems were mere acne inconveniences. And a few weeks after that, they were gone. I don't know if this solution will work for everyone. Probably, for some people, even with a healthy diet the cleansers and medications are necessary. But if acne is making your life miserable, eating balanced, nutricious meals is certainly worth a try!

Your Teen's Mental Health Problems Can Be Hard To Recognize

Some parents do not realize that their teenagers can have huge mental health problems. This is mostly because adolescents do everything they can to appear normal thanks to pressure from peers and family alike.

parents don’t know how to separate their teenager's normal growing pains from what might be real problems with their mental health. Teenagers can be hard to read, so it makes sense that these problems can go largely undiagnosed for some adolescents.

Sometimes Suicide Is The Result

There is a large group of teens with adolescent mental health issues that go undetected. Sometimes this goes on until it is too late. As parents, it can be hard to think that your child could possibly have these problems at such a young age, and even when the teen is throwing hints around, they can go ignored. That doesn't make those parents bad people, it just means they know very little about adolescent mental health. For some, when a teen tries to or succeeds at suicide, parents look back and see the signs when it is too late.

Depression and Anxiety Are Common among Teens

Depression and anxiety are two very common adolescent mental health problems that can occur. If you know that depression runs in your family, do not dismiss that this could happen to your teenager. Things growing up as a teenager are hard enough, but if you add depression to the mix, it could be overwhelming. Anxiety is a problem of adolescent mental health when teens are overwhelmed and feel that there is no way out of those feelings and the issues that might be causing that anxiety.

Be Watchful For The Danger Signs

Some signs that parents miss in regards to adolescent mental health issues are things that teens hide very well, and it is not too surprising that they are missed at first. Some teens deal with their problems by cutting themselves. They do this in areas where the cuts can not be seen and they go to great lengths to hide them. Those with adolescent mental health problems can also get caught up in underage drinking, drugs, and very questionable sexual activities. Those are things that some teens can easily hide as well, though not always.

Try Professional Help

If you think you see signs of mental health issues with your teenager, keep an eye on what is going on and see if you can get them to go in to see someone for evaluation. They may not like the idea, but if they are really having problems, they will probably give in - even if they act like you are forcing them. Dealing with and admitting to adolescent mental health problems can be very hard for a teenager, so keep that in mind. If you feel strongly enough that the signs are all there, do what you have to do to keep them safe and healthy. You don’t want things to get out of control.

We all make mistakes when it comes time to eat the right things in the right ways. The biggest problem that most have is that they do not have the time to cook as they wish that they could, and they take the easy route by going through the drive-thru at some local fast food joint.

Though that does save time, and the food tastes good, it is not doing much for your health. This is okay once in a while, but it should be the exception rather than the rule. It is important to develop healthy eating habits that are going to stay with you and your kids for life.

What you may not realize is that you may not have healthy eating habits, even if you are avoiding the drive-thru. Many times, the things that we get from the store are chosen because they are fast and easy. That does not mean all of this stuff is bad for you, or could not be incorporated into a healthy eating habits, but you do have to be careful about what you choose. Look for things with natural ingredients and the lowest amount of additives and preservatives.

Meal Planning Can Help You Eat Healthier

You don’t have to take three hours to cook dinner if you want to develop healthy eating habits. What you don’t know is that you can mix some pre-made items in with some homemade items to have a really great tasting and immensely healthy type of meal each night. There are many books out there about healthy yet quick meal ideas that you can use each time you are running short on time and energy. Many of them incorporate health eating habits, and that is exactly what you want to look for.

You may cook each night and think that you have healthy eating habits. What you have to do to find out if that is really the truth is to see what each part of your cooking patterns include. Do you know if you are using the healthiest oils when cooking? Are you use any fresh vegetables? Does your meat meet your health qualifications? Are you hitting all of the major foods groups with each and every meal? If you can answer those questions, you can fix what is wrong and work towards some really great healthy eating habits for you and your children.

Eating Habits Are Hard To Break

Healthy eating habits are the hardest for those that are older and have been eating the wrong foods for a very long time. They are so used to certain foods that they don’t think they are going to like anything else, and they don’t care to try. What you can do to encourage healthy eating habits at this time in life is to slowly add new things to the others that they already love. You can also find healthier ways to cook those same things. You want to change things slowly but surely for the best results. They may not even see what you have done until they are eating and feeling better.

Now that the election is finally over, one of the topics that emerged from the contest was the fact that Sarah Palin's youngest child was born with Down Syndrome.

the topic became political fodder for abortion debates, it heightened public awareness of Downs Syndrome and a child who has it. We thought this was a good time to provide more information about the disorder.

Downs Syndrome Is Not Preventable

Couples who are thinking of starting a family are curious about Downs Syndrome. Everyone wants a healthy baby and there is quite a lot of information available to couples on the subject of prenatal health and the prevention of birth defects. Though many types of defects and abnormalities can be prevented, some can not, such as Down Syndrome. Something about Downs Syndrome that couples may not know is that it is not preventable and it is not inherited through family genetics. Children born with Down Syndrome do not have to have a lesser quality of life than children without the disorder, but they do require a higher degree of educational intervention, as well as guidance for behavior modification.

What Exactly Is Down Syndrome?

Down Syndrome occurs when extra genetic material is present on the 21st chromosome, and is represented through specific characteristics. According to various internet resources about Downs Syndrome, the chances of having a child born with the disorder increases with maternal age, especially age 35 and older. Screening for Down Syndrome is recommended for all women who have had a previous child born with the disorder, or a variation thereof, and for all women over the age of 35 years. Amniocentesis is the preferred method to sample fetal cells, and is the most definitive way to see if the fetus is affected with any disorder or abnormality. There are other aspects about Downs Syndrome that can also be detected if the disorder is present. If the fetus is found to have a more severe form, called Trisomy 21, the pregnancy usually will prove to not be viable and will miscarry. If carried to term, the fetus usually does not live, and if it does, it will have an array of debilitating physical and medical issues that will limit the life span of the infant.

Children With Down Syndrome Have Certain Physical Features

We have all seen children with the characteristic features of this disorder. Most children that have Down Syndrome have certain physical features such as, decreased muscle tone, a singular crease on each palm of the hand, flattened bridge of the nose, and epicanthal folds over each eye. Developmental delays and varying degrees of mental retardation are also present, requiring these children to have some type of special education if feasible, and physical therapy, in addition to prescribed medical treatments and intervention. There is much to learn about Downs Syndrome, and couples that are thinking about having children should be aware of all the risk factors, incidence rates, characteristics, and what is involved in caring for a child with Down Syndrome. If you are thinking about becoming pregnant, learn all you can about Downs Syndrome.

In summary, if a woman is over 35 or has already has a child with Down Syndrome, she should have Amniocentesis testing. A child born with Downs Syndrome will have a normal quality of life but will require special care.

Times Have Changed

Developing patterns of healthy eating for kids is not easy, but it is doable! I know kids like all sorts of junk food more than what's good for them,

but it's worth trying to develop these healthy patterns when they're young. Lifestyles have changed for children, and that's not necessarily a good thing. They spend more time watching TV or playing video games or sitting at the computer. Why when I was a boy (something my father said to me a million times), we spent a lot of our free time playing games outside, games like basketball, volleyball, etc. That was before the PC and the Internet came into our lives.

Obesity On The Rise

And the sad result of this is the incidence of obesity among children and teenagers, and, surprisingly , some are developing Type-2 diabetes. This is a real tragedy. These young diabetics will be battling this disease until they come to grips with it and lose all that extra weight and modify their lifestyles dramatically. It'll be a lot easier on them now if you can instill some modest changes in their diet and tried to get them up off the couch and pursue some physical "fun" thing like shooting baskets or throwing a Frisbee around, so they wouldn't end up with this more serious problem.

A Constant Struggle

Every parent knows what healthy foods for kids are, yet it's a constant struggle to convince them. There are a number of reasons. For example, during a visit to a friend's home, that Mom may offer sweet treats, which the kids interpret as something they don't get so frequently at home. Although the friend's Mom intends the goodie as, well, a treat, kids arrive home, telling their own Mom, “Wow, Mrs. Smith let us have a bunch of cookies! How come you don't?” You hear the accusation in the question.

Almost every kid has a sweet tooth and would rather have a candy bar than a healthy blueberry muffin. When kids go to school, there are sodas, chips and candy bars available in vending machines. Peer pressure is incredibly powerful. You become the odd person out, so boring and strict in your promotion of healthy eating for kids. You soon feel that your efforts are doomed to failure. Many a Mom eventually caves. Don't make this mistake! This only contributes to a child becoming overweight and often, a lifelong struggle with weight control and a poor self image.

Subtlety Might Be The Answer

There are lots of ways to continue making healthy eating for kids your priority. You just need to be subtle, persuasive and consistent. You can win them over to your way of thinking. Here are some suggestions.

You know that a kid's favorite question is, “Why?”. Although this can drive you crazy after the 100th time you hear it today, this question can be a secret weapon in your battle to develop long term patterns of healthy eating for kids, which sticks with them long after they've left home. Remember, poor eating habits tend to stick just as tenaciously. Here's how to use the “Why?” to advantage.

Try Promoting Nutrition

Get an age-appropriate primer on nutrition, which gives information on the role that good nutrition plays in keeping a body healthy. When you hand your child an orange for an after school snack, chances are that you'll hear, “Aaaw, why can't I have a cookie instead?” You grab the book and turn to the section on vitamin C. Little kids can relate to the misery they endure with frequent colds, while teens respond to zit and skin blemish issues. The point is, you've given them a legitimate reason. They may still try for the cookie, but they'll settle for the orange. Don't force your program of healthy eating for kids down their throats, just subtly and gradually educate them on good nutrition.

Don't Go Overboard

No kid is going to go for a relentless parade of healthy food. You've got to let up once in a while, without overdoing it. For example, if you serve a fruit pie with ice cream, or even an over the top chocolate cake once a week, such treats will not make them fat or unhealthy. Instead, it changes their perspective on treats, as something terrific to look forward to at Sunday dinner. Surprise them with the giant pizza every now and then. This type of careful distribution of treats eliminates the 'forbidden' factor. They'll soon come to see for themselves that balance, moderation and healthy eating for kids, is a good thing.

Set A Good Example

You must also be setting a good example. If you choose to indulge in chips, candy or whatever your unhealthy pleasure may be, while they're stuck with a banana, your strategy won't work. They'll start using their lunch money at the vending machine.

Which brings us to our last point. How do you teach them that junk food should not be a staple of healthy eating? Show them how to read food labels and get one of those pocket books which list food additives. There are several which give the scoop on every additive used in processed foods and what it does inside your body. Some are enough to make your hair curl, or straighten as the case may be.

The bottom line in successfully promoting patterns of healthy eating for kids is to give them reasons to want to eat healthy food. This strategy works!

I realize that children love McDonald's and other fast-food restaurants. McDonald's even markets to children.

do you think there are playrooms there? One of the reasons they introduced a line of nutritious items like their expanded salad line was so that moms could eat healthy while their children gobbled down Big Macs and fries. Everybody's happy, most of all McDonald's. But parents should start thinking about the eating habits their children are developing, which might help explain why Type-2 diabetes is starting to become a health problem for some children and teenagers. I realize there probably isn't a child alive who would prefer something healthy instead of McDonald's fries. I understand perfectly since I've devoured a lot of them in my life. But I started later in life to develop this bad habit. Fortunately I broke it. I'm not moralizing here, just making some suggestions! My wife feels a little more strongly about it.

Break The Fast Food Habit!

Please don't tell me you had McDonalds for lunch. This is the prime reason our nation is in the bad shape they currently complain about. Fast food, fast food, fast food! We've got to learn to avoid all that fast food. Don't buy into the commercials that act like you will have a wonderful and healthy day if you scarf down a value meal. In reality this is completely bogus. The truth is in the fat and calories. When you consume that Big Mac and large fries, your body is overwhelmed with fat and cholesterol. Not only does this clog your arteries and cause you to pack on the pounds, but it also makes you fatigued. Have you noticed your lack of energy? Meals that are high in fat will have that effect on you. They basically weigh you down, and make you tired. This is not a good thing. What you want is to feel energetic and ready to go do anything. You want to tackle your life properly, but need healthy eating plans to do so.

Have you adopted healthy eating plans for you and your family? When I say healthy eating plans, I mean meals that lack fats, salts, sugars, and cholesterol, but thrive with water, vitamins, and minerals. These are nutrients you can acquire from fresh organic fruits, vegetables, and meats. You need all of these for truly healthy eating plans. In addition, you need to avoid processed foods such as chips, cookies, and crackers. All of which commonly contain preservatives, and additives harmful to our bodies. I will admit that it took our family quite a while to really look into healthy eating plans. We all loved junk food just like anyone else. Now, it's not that you can't enjoy and ice cream cone, or chocolate brownie once in a while, but you really have to consume in moderation. For example, those fatty, sugar infused foods will hurt you if gobbled down on a daily basis.

Research Healthy Eating Plans On The Internet

Are you currently researching healthy eating plans? I will give you the heads-up that the Internet is a wonderful place to start. You can get nutrition advice regarding virtually anything and everything you wish. Check out the value of a carrot, or get the scoop on what all is in a Whopper. It's truly all at your fingertips. This is the age of knowledge, folks. Don't get duped by ads. Investigate on your own. It's high-time to acquire those healthy eating plans and appreciate the body and life you've been given. You'll be glad you did!

I'm allergic to some types of pet dander and pollen, she sees a specialist on a regular basis because her allergies are more complex and serious. Since she's the expert in the family, she's writing today's post.

Be Vigilant
My daughter’s preschool teacher sent home a memo the first week of school to let all of the parents know that one of the children in the class has a severe allergy to peanuts. We were supposed to keep this in mind for when it was our turn to provide the class treats each week. I had never had to deal with a food allergy in my family, so this was completely new to me. Two years later, I discovered I was allergic to cheese! When it was my snack week, I went crazy trying to find something that would not cause this child to have an allergic reaction. I am shocked at how many products without peanuts have warnings that they may have come into contact with peanuts at some point. However, I ended up picking out some treats that didn’t adversely affect the child and everything was fine.

Our Family's Allergies

We have a few allergies in my family that I am always keeping in the back of my mind. I am allergic to penicillin, which has become much milder as I’ve gotten older. Of course, that doesn’t affect me on a daily basis. I'm also allergic to certain foods, particularly dairy products, which I only recently developed. My husband is allergic to cats. I had two cats when I first met him and he neglected to tell me this. Once we were married, he couldn’t hide his allergic reaction anymore. I found him sneezing hysterically one day when I returned home from work. Oddly enough, he loves cats, he just gets a stuffy allergic reaction to them. We’ve kept the cats as family members, I simply spend more time ensuring that there isn’t as much cat hair around to irritate his allergies. My daughter is allergic to bees. It didn’t take long, after one stung her as a baby, to determine that she was having an allergic reaction to the sting. She developed a rash within minutes and started to swell. As scary as it was, we have been dealing with it for 4 years now and know how to properly handle the situation if and when it arises.

What Causes Allergies?

There are so many things in the world that cause an allergic reaction in so many different people and countries, it makes it difficult to narrow down the causes. The only way to know for sure is to see a specialist like I do, who can conduct tests that will tell you exactly what your allergies are.My doctor is an ear, nose, and throat specialist. Trouble is, allergies come and go. You might be allergic to dairy products, but a year or two later your symptoms to them dissipate. Whether it is an allergy to an animal or to a food, everyone experiences their allergic reaction in different ways. You can’t always cater to every type of allergic reaction or allergy that may cross your path, but sometimes, you need to be aware of them. If you do have school age children, you should know if there are some kids that may have an allergic reaction to certain foods. If you’re having overnight guests, you may want to find out if they are allergic to your pets. If you are aware of allergies ahead of time, you may be able to avoid quite a bit of inconvenience for yourself and others. Plus, it may be appreciated much more than you could ever realize.

You might as well start your new infant off on the right foot in life by feeding him or her with healthy baby food.

The first couple of years of your infan's life are truly the formative years, so it's important to see they get the best and healthiest nutrition possible.
Start With Mother's Own
When you gave birth to your first baby, you doubtless experienced the unique joy that only a baby can bring. Your baby is the "best baby in the whole wide world." For the first few months, breastfeeding or formula is all your baby's brand new body can handle, supplying all the nutrition that's required for good health.

Moving To Solid Food

Then, along the third or fourth month of life, your baby's ready for some solid food. You've got to work into this slowly, beginning with easily digestible and nutritious foods. It's soon apparent that you're faced with an awesome task: providing healthy baby food for this most precious human being. You want to give your child the best start in life. Your pediatrician will recommend particular foods, but perhaps not endorse a particular brand.

You've now become familiar with all of the baby foods and products at your local supermarket. It's a bewildering and huge selection, ranging from store brands to pricey organic baby foods. Through friends and websites, you may have heard that the ordinary store brands might contain food grown with pesticides, additives and preservatives. You cannot accept such foods as healthy baby food for your baby! How can you assure yourself of just what's in that little jar of baby food?

Try To Feed Your Baby Natural Foods

For one thing, read the labels! By law, all ingredients must be shown on the label. If you see a list of names you cannot pronounce, that baby food is not the healthiest you can provide.

There are several brands of baby food which contain only foods grown organically, with no pesticides, hormones or undesirable additives. These may safely be considered healthy baby food. The down side is that they are usually quite expensive. There's no question that your baby deserves the best, but you've got to pay the bills and keep a roof over that cute little head too. What's the answer?

Homemade Baby Food

These days many young mothers are opting for homemade baby food as a healthy baby food alternative to purchased baby foods. All you need is a blender to transform organically grown fruit into a healthy dish for your little one. This way, you know that what your baby's eating is good, nutritious food. To prepare the fruit, wash it thoroughly and then blanch it for just a minute in a bowl of boiling water, to remove the skin. When your baby's a little older, leave the skin on, as fiber and valuable nutrients in the skin add to the nutritional value.

Make Your Own Baby Food

If you've got a home garden and you don't use pesticides, this makes ideal fare for baby. At about the age of six months, babies can begin to eat a wide selection of foods, but always consult your pediatrician before introducing new foods.

When your baby's old enough to eat what the family eats, you can simply take a portion of what's on tonight's menu and grind it up, using a blender or food processor. When your own meals are nutritious and well balanced, you know your baby's getting a good start to life. All foods may not be met with enthusiasm, but it is a good way to get baby to try new foods.

Serving healthy baby food isn't as hard as you might think and you can't do better than organic, homemade baby food!

Whether it is ADD, dyslexia, or something else, it is a challenge for all involved. A child who has a high IQ but fails in school may have a simple case of test anxiety.
Freeze Up When Taking Tests
There are many smart children out there that are mistakenly labeled as not so bright. This is because they tend to do well when they are given homework or when they have a project, but they freeze when they are tested. This is commonly known as test anxiety, and it can cause huge problems for students who suffer from it. They may be very intelligent, but because tests are so important to gauge where a student is with their studies, the anxiety stops them from doing well and their true level of intelligence is missed.

Missed Diagnosis Can Become Problematic

Students that have test anxiety often feel like they aren’t that bright as well. They think they have problems, and they don’t realize it is just a matter of freezing up when a test is put in front of them. If they suffer from test anxiety and they know it, they can work on it, but most don’t know what is going on. This is where parents and teachers have to keep eyes open for signs of anything like this. If a child does well on assignments and other graded things, but can’t pass a test, there may be more to it than just laziness or a learning disability.

Standardized Tests

The worst time for test anxiety to strike is on standardized tests. These are given during certain years of school and are used to decide how well each student is doing and how well the school is doing in general. If test anxiety affects these tests, a smart child could end up in special education for no reason other than they cannot take a test without being overcome with fear. It is not something that is easily understood by anyone unless they are suffering from it, but it might be a very early form of performance anxiety.

What To Do

If you suspect your child has test anxiety, ask the teacher of your child to talk to you about what you think is going on. There are things that can help with this, and if a student has it, and it is caught early, it should be easy enough to fix. Once a student gets over having test anxiety they can go on to work at their true potential. If left unchecked, they might flunk out, and they may have the same panic with any stressful situation in the future. They may freeze up during a driver’s test, a job interview, or will simply learn to avoid these things, which may limit quality of life. That will only happen in extreme cases, but that doesn’t mean all cases should not be taken seriously.
