Any allergy, from whatever media it might come from, begins with the same reaction. The body mistakenly assumes that an particle, whether it's pollen, or in the case of food allergies, a food protein, as a harmful threat.

The immune system then releases immunoglobin E, otherwise known as IgE into the bloodstream, triggering a chain of events that release histamines in the body to attempt to combat the foreign particle. A skin rash, runny eyes, sneezing, whatever the manifestations, they still have the same first steps.

Want To Know Baby Food Allergies

A baby will typically have an adverse reaction toward a food product, and one can often easily see what these reactions are. An example of an intolerant reaction to a food product would be from lactose intolerance, where people who are intolerant cannot break down the sugar in dairy products.

 Spotting Trouble Signs

A potentially dangerous allergy in infants can be seen because of the reactions from the food being eaten. A common example would be an infant having loose bowels after eating, and may even vomit the food in an effort to expel it from the body.
The throat may also close up or the lips and face may swell up. Rashes or hives may appear, among other unusual symptoms in the skin surface can be seen of infant's skin. An intolerance is different than an allergy, and usually has more to do with intestinal trouble than reaction to any particular allergen.

 How To Avoid Allergy Troubles

When introducing a new food product to your infant, be sure to try only minute quantities at first so that you can see if there are any unpleasant reactions to the food, and afterwards you can slowly increase the amount you are feeding when there are no apparent reactions.

During the course of introducing new food to your child, you should be able to see as well if your child likes it. If there are no negative reactions present, then you can safely increase the quantity given to a normal level.

The timing of introducing new foods should also be considered, and you'll want to feed your child with new food early in the day so that you still have ample time to take your child to the pediatrician during clinic hours and disrupt your baby's daily routine the least.

Ninety percent of all allergic reactions come from just eight food sources, and they are common enough to be found in foods everywhere. These are the kind of food products that you'll want to check up on for your child, just to make sure that
there is no reaction whatsoever.

Milk is one of the most common, and you should check with dairy products should there be an adverse reaction. Eggs are the second on the list of allergen foods. Peanuts and tree nuts are some common allergens right up to adulthood, and they'll have to manage these allergies all their life.

Fish and shellfish allergies can be outgrown, however. Soy and wheat are the last two materials that round out the list, and children can often outgrow these allergies as well Having an allergic reaction is somewhat a bit of a bother, but with proper management, avoidance, or treatment, your child can outgrow these allergies, or manage to live with it at the very least.

Check up by an physician to make sure whether your child is allergic or not.

Some Herbal Remedies Can Be Harmful During Pregnancy

Herbal medicine has been practiced for thousands of years around the world, and has almost attained mainstream popularity. Nearly one third of Americans have used herbal treatments or some other forms of alternative medicine.

However, if you're pregnant, you must understand that a little bit of knowledge can indeed be dangerous when it comes to herbals. There are some herbs that may safely be used during pregnancy, but unless you are a naturopathic doctor, or consult one, it's safest to avoid any herbal treatments during your pregnancy. Here we take a brief look at just eight herbs to avoid during pregnancy, absolutely.

Consult A Doctor About What You Can Eat During Pregnancy

This is not a comprehensive list of herbs to avoid during pregnancy. They represent some of the most dangerous to expectant mothers. Six of these will actually induce abortion and sometimes death. Two of these six are classified by the FDA as GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe). One of these herbs has culinary uses. This list intends to drive home the point that you must be vigilant and always consult a naturopathic doctor before using any herbs during your pregnancy.

Ephedra. Ephedra and the following Hoodia are popular weight loss agents. Ephedra, also known as Ma-Huang, is a powerful stimulant. It does have some legitimate uses as a medicinal agent, but even experts generally use this cautiously.

Hoodia is a plant traditionally used by indigenous tribes in Western Australia to help them endure hunger on long hunting forages in extreme heat. This plant is now avidly consumed by people who believe it will help them lose weight.

Pennyroyal and Rue should also be avoided during pregnancy as both can induce abortion and both are classified by the FDA as GRAS. Although many people drink Pennyroyal tea, in the mint family, it is the oil which brings on miscarriage and causes liver damage in quite small amounts. Rue is used as an effective antispasmodic. However, even handling the plant can cause external itching and burning of the skin. The oil causes nerve damage and may induce abortion. There are many other herbs which effectively deal with muscle spasms and that are not as dangerous.

Angelica, while having many good medicinal applications, such as helping indigestion, insomnia and nervousness, also promotes menstrual flow and can induce a miscarriage.

Juniper Berry and Mandrake do not have much to recommend them in any herbal application. Both can induce abortion. Juniper can cause kidney damage, convulsions and high blood pressure, while Mandrake causes nausea and extreme irritation of the intestines.

Tansy has been used to encourage fertility, but also can cause abortion. It deserves mention due to its common use in salads and marinades, as well as in cosmetics, notably for acne.

Again, this is only a sampling of herbs to avoid during pregnancy. If you wish to use herbs during pregnancy, consult a professional before you do!

An Allergic reaction can be very serious or even fatal and it can occur almost instantly leaving little reaction time. Allergic reactions occur when a person who is sensitive to an allergen experiences uncomfortable symptoms.

Common allergens that trigger symptoms are dogs, cats, bee stings, dust, dust mites, trees, weeds, molds, and foods, such as nuts, strawberries, and shellfish, which usually start to occur within seconds of exposure and can cause mild to moderate reactions such as, skin rashes, hives, itching, sneezing, or watery eyes. More moderate to severe allergic reactions include difficulty breathing, swelling of tongue, wheezing, nausea/vomiting, abdominal pain, chest pain or tightness, and unconsciousness. Acute anaphylactic allergic reactions happen suddenly and progress rapidly; treatment must be administered within fifteen minutes or death could occur from anaphylactic shock.

Most Allergic Reactions Happen Quickly

Most allergic reactions occur quickly but some may take up to a few hours, and do not usually occur after twenty-four hours from exposure. Allergic reactions tend to be more severe when exposure to the allergen is repeated on different occasions, and each time it requires smaller and smaller amounts of the allergen to cause symptoms. In most cases of environmental and pet allergies, simply taking an antihistamine such as Benadryl, and/or a decongestant will relieve symptoms, and some people also may also require immunotherapy and asthma treatment in addition to other medications as well. Substances like shellfish, poison ivy, peanuts, and bee stings should be avoided whenever possible, because more severe reactions usually result when exposure occurs. Some adults and children who have experienced severe allergic reactions in the past, must carry an Epi-Pen in case of accidental exposure. The Epi-Pen contains epinephrine and comes in a pre-filled syringe ready for emergency administration. Simply pull off the needle guard and inject into a large muscle, such as the thigh. The Epi-Pen can be administered right through clothing so there is no need to waste valuable time trying to remove clothing.

Monitor The Victim Closely

After an allergic reaction has begun it is very important to monitor the person. If symptoms do not subside within five minutes and they continue to worsen even after administration of an Epi-Pen, emergency treatment should be sought immediately. Visit the National Library of Health and National Institutes of Health at www.nlm.nih.gov for more information on allergic reactions and answers to other health related questions. Allergic reactions are quite common and it is important that people know what to do in the event one occurs to themselves or someone else – it could be a matter of life or death.

All year long, they bother me. I tried everything. Allergy shots helped a little, improving my diet helped a little, but nothing did much until I got my air purification system.

Hepa Filter System

There are several types of air purification systems. Mine is of the type called a hepa. A Hepa filter system has a high efficiency filter that traps particles which are blown through the system by a powerful fan. On top of this, it has an activated carbon pre-filter, which filters out molds, and odors. In most tests done by scientific organizations, this type of filter has rated the best of all of them. There's just no comparison. If you turn it on before you go to sleep, you'll be breathing clearly in the morning and be happy and healthy all day.

Ionizer

Another popular type of air purification system is the ionizer. This is a high tech solution, but people don't think it actually works that well. Basically, it takes all the air that goes through it and electrically charges it. This makes it cling to surfaces – carpets, furniture, bedding. Practically anything. It gets the dust out of the air, but does it by just making it settle in the room. Then you have to dust and vacuum, as well as frequently washing your bedding, or else the allergens are just as bad or even worse.

Washable Air Filter

A washable filter air purification system is supposed to be a good choice, although I have never used one personally. In most respects it is like a hepa, running air through its filter and trapping dirt and dust inside. The problem with hepas is that you have to replaice the filter about every six months and the pre filter even more frequently – maybe every month or two. This can add up to a lot of money! But with a washable filter air purifier system, you never or almost never have to replace the filter. Just wash it, and it will be as good as new!

It is a good idea to read scientific reports and studies before buying an air purification system. There are so many on the market, and some are much better than others. They tend to be rated in several ways: how much space they can clean at once and, on average, how much they improve the air quality. So, if you have a small room, a small air purification system will work, but if your room is big, you might need a larger and potentially much more expensive one.

Since we're approaching the holiday season and fall is in its last lap, I wanted to follow up on the subject of allergies and allergic reactions. This is a period of the year when allergies here in the Midwest are high. And I want to tell you a story that will amaze you.

As I said in an earlier post, my wife, our daughter, and I each have allergies.

Our symptoms to our allergic reactions are similar to a cold or flu. Other people who might be allergic to shell fish or peanuts or bees, can have violent, even life-hreatening allergic reactions. Their faces swell up, they break out in hives, their throat might swell up and close off their air supply--potentially life-threatening reactions. These people probably have been told by a doctor about their allergies and are careful to avoid their problem causing stimulus.

Some allergic reactions fade over time

One problem that complicates this allergic reaction situation is that people's allergies change over their lifetime. You might be allergic to shell fish when you're a kid, but as you grow older, that allergy diminishes and you might acquire another allergy to something different! It makes dealing with allergies very difficult.

The Need To Consult A Specialist

The only way to really pinpoint the cause of what's making you feel lousy is to go to a specialist and take some tests to find out what you're allergic to so you'll know what to avoid and how to treat your allergic reaction. A dermatologist or an ears nose and throat specialist could perform the tests. Or log on to the Internet to find out more about the subject.

My Wife's Amazing Story

But I want to tell you this anecdote to make my point: my wife has some severe allergies--dairy products, red meat and others. But this is the most bizarre one. She was really suffering from something new several years ago. It was in November. The weather was getting colder, and she had what she thought it was the flu. She has Meunire's disease which is an inner ear disorder that is affected by her allergies and her Meunire's symtoms were acting up. So she went to her doctor and he thought her recent symptoms was an allergic reaction to something new. So she took some tests--relatively simple ones administered in the doctor's office. It took about a week for the lab results to get back, and she went back find out the results. Turns out she was allergic to cockroaches. Cockroaches! But she hadn't even seen a cockroach in years, so how could it be?

Well, she works for a big ad agency in Chicago in a downtown high rise. Cockroaches are just about anywhere there's food, and there were several restaurants in the building. Cockroaches infiltrated the building, got into the ventilation shafts, died, their bodies decayed and turned into dust. When the heating system cranked up in November, the cockroach dust became airborne and everybody in the building inhaled it! Is that disgusting or what?! I'm not making that up, I swear! So the doctor gave her some medication for her allergic reaction to cockroach dust and the problem was solved.

My point is she never would have know what was causing her allergic reaction unless she had seen her doctor and had the tests done. You might think you're allergic to pet dander when it's actually dust mites or something else. To relieve your allergic reactions, you must first know what's causing them.

I'm allergic to some types of pet dander and pollen, she sees a specialist on a regular basis because her allergies are more complex and serious. Since she's the expert in the family, she's writing today's post.

Be Vigilant
My daughter’s preschool teacher sent home a memo the first week of school to let all of the parents know that one of the children in the class has a severe allergy to peanuts. We were supposed to keep this in mind for when it was our turn to provide the class treats each week. I had never had to deal with a food allergy in my family, so this was completely new to me. Two years later, I discovered I was allergic to cheese! When it was my snack week, I went crazy trying to find something that would not cause this child to have an allergic reaction. I am shocked at how many products without peanuts have warnings that they may have come into contact with peanuts at some point. However, I ended up picking out some treats that didn’t adversely affect the child and everything was fine.

Our Family's Allergies

We have a few allergies in my family that I am always keeping in the back of my mind. I am allergic to penicillin, which has become much milder as I’ve gotten older. Of course, that doesn’t affect me on a daily basis. I'm also allergic to certain foods, particularly dairy products, which I only recently developed. My husband is allergic to cats. I had two cats when I first met him and he neglected to tell me this. Once we were married, he couldn’t hide his allergic reaction anymore. I found him sneezing hysterically one day when I returned home from work. Oddly enough, he loves cats, he just gets a stuffy allergic reaction to them. We’ve kept the cats as family members, I simply spend more time ensuring that there isn’t as much cat hair around to irritate his allergies. My daughter is allergic to bees. It didn’t take long, after one stung her as a baby, to determine that she was having an allergic reaction to the sting. She developed a rash within minutes and started to swell. As scary as it was, we have been dealing with it for 4 years now and know how to properly handle the situation if and when it arises.

What Causes Allergies?

There are so many things in the world that cause an allergic reaction in so many different people and countries, it makes it difficult to narrow down the causes. The only way to know for sure is to see a specialist like I do, who can conduct tests that will tell you exactly what your allergies are.My doctor is an ear, nose, and throat specialist. Trouble is, allergies come and go. You might be allergic to dairy products, but a year or two later your symptoms to them dissipate. Whether it is an allergy to an animal or to a food, everyone experiences their allergic reaction in different ways. You can’t always cater to every type of allergic reaction or allergy that may cross your path, but sometimes, you need to be aware of them. If you do have school age children, you should know if there are some kids that may have an allergic reaction to certain foods. If you’re having overnight guests, you may want to find out if they are allergic to your pets. If you are aware of allergies ahead of time, you may be able to avoid quite a bit of inconvenience for yourself and others. Plus, it may be appreciated much more than you could ever realize.

Allergies Afflict Most Of Us

Most of us are allergic to something. It could be almost anything from pollen to some type of food to bees or certain plants, you name it.

A lot of people don't even realize that their cold or flu is actually an allergy. My wife, for example, is allergic to many things but not at the same point in time. One or two things make her sick, then a year later she's ok with them, but something else that never bothered her before now makes her sick. The only way to know for sure what's causing your allergies to flare up is to go to a specialist and have tests done. An eyes, ears, nose and throat specialist can isolate what sets you off. With an accurate diagnosis you can take measures to avoid whatever is causing the problem.

If you don't have seasonal allergies, you probably know someone who does. Allergies typically show up inspring and fall. It's hard to get out and appreciate fields of spring flowers or blazing colors in the fall. Burning, itchy, red eyes and tightly stuffed or irritatingly runny noses are de rigeur. Water accumulates in the head, especially around the ears. Cuddly pets become not so cuddly. Headaches only add to the discomfort.
Over The Counter Remedies Offer Only Temporary Relief
You may well wonder if there are any allergy remedies that allow you to enjoy the seasons without suffering the symptoms. Over the counter medications offer temporary relief, but many carry side effects such as drowsiness that you can't afford in your daily life. Here are a few natural allergy remedies that deserve a try.
How Allergies Work
You first need to understand the dynamics of allergies. The offending pollen, pet dander or mold has a nasty habit of zeroing in on the mucous membranes. One grain of any of these offenders may become attached to your soft mucous membranes, in the nasal passages, triggering your immune system to produce histamines in response. These histamines cause your body to respond to the invasion, producing reactions that cause your body to flush these unwanted invaders. The results of this flushing action are the symptoms of allergies, which are the cause of your suffering!

Conventional over the counter antihistamines destroy the body's natural efforts to rid your body of the offenders, while subduing the symptoms which caused you to seek medication in the first place.

Some Natural Remedies

Aren't there any natural allergy remedies that allow your body to do the job without the annoying symptoms? As a matter of fact, there are. Natural allergy remedies aim to prevent symptoms before they occur. Here is just a short list of allergy remedies that are worthy of consideration.

Dietary input figures prominently in the impact of your symptoms. Studies have shown that foods rich in the Omega-3 fatty acids tend to suppress allergic reactions. Cold water fish, flaxseed, naturally raised meats and eggs, as well as walnuts are rich in this nutrient. Include these foods in your diet for a positive effect.

Among the natural allergy remedies, try hot dijon mustard, horseradish or hot chili peppers as a nasal decongestant. You'll experience immediate relief.

In Indian culture, the Neti pot is the vehicle of choice. A Neti pot is a small vase of salt water which is used like a nasal spray, deactivating the offending intruder, both preventing attacks and relieving nasal congestion.

Other natural allergy remedies abound in the world of herbs. Butterbur, a common weed in Europe, provides an alternative to OTC antihistamines. Papaya enjoys a special synergism with proteins, pertinent to relief of allergy symptoms. Eyebright relieves nasal congestion, thick mucous and coughs. Hay fever and nasal congestion may be relieved with skunk cabbage root.

For a truly off the wall treatment, try Cubeb, the unripe berry of this native pepper of Sumatra. When crushed and rolled into an herbal “cigarette”, hay fever symptoms subside.
