Many people are interested in herbs these days, and there's a lot to learn about them. Books, magazine articles, blogs, health newsletters all routinely carry informative articles about herbs. They add flavor to food and they can also promote health.

There is so much information to absorb on this topic that it's a good idea not to worry about learning everything there is to know all at once. In ancient cultures, the healers, or medicine people, spent their entire lives studying to be expert practitioners of herbal medicine.

Some of us have our first exposure to herbs in the kitchen. We love the distinct flavor or cilantro in Mexican food, the oregano, thyme and garlic in many Italian dishes, the aroma and sharp taste of curry when we sample Indian cuisine, and rosemary paired with leg of lamb. The cuisine of cultures worldwide developed around the herbs available to the people cooking there. The variety is astounding, and now as cultures around the globe are in greater communication than ever, and people are crossing borders in great numbers, more and more people are being exposed to new flavors through herbs.

Herbs As Medicine For Centuries

Traditional cultures also still use herbs as medicines. They don't have access to all-night pharmacies like industrialized nations do. But even industrialized nations depended on many herbs before the development of antibiotics in the 20th century. They proved to be so effective, many folk remedies fell by the wayside. People didn't think it was important anymore to learn about herbs and how effective they can be in helping us resist and treat disease.

Herbal Remedies On The Rise

Now, however, people are getting more interested in herbal remedies. Overuse of antibiotics has caused antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria to develop, which frightens many. We've actually learned that many of our common medicines, even aspirin, are derived from traditional healing sources.

Western cultures are also increasingly interested in eastern healing modalities, especially Chinese herbal medicine and Indian ayurveda medicine. These have been practiced for thousands of years. People who enter these healing professions need to learn a lot about herbs, their attributes and uses. They do it, of course, one herb at a time.

Astragalus Boosts Immune System

If you're new to the study of herbs. Here's an interesting one to know. Astragalus is a herb in the Chinese medicinal pantheon. Your acupuncturist probably knows a lot about its properties and uses. It is said to be an immune booster and energy builder. It is often prescribed by practitioners of Chinese medicine alone or blended with other immune and energy enhancing herbs such as ginseng and echinacea.

Both Treatments Go Back Thousands Of Years

Things don't always necessarily need to be new in order to be helpful. This is true in a lot of areas in life and is also true when it comes to certain types of medical treatments.

As a matter of fact, there were treatments that were being performed thousands of years ago in Asia that still have some medical benefits, even today. One of those is the practice of acupuncture, something that is becoming more popular in Western society today. What exactly is acupuncture and how can it help you with your health?

How Acupuncture Works

Acupuncture is a part of traditional Chinese medicine in which small, hair sized needles are inserted into the body at specific locations in order to alter the flow of energy. These channels which, according to Chinese acupuncture medicine, run through the body keep everything in line and balanced. If one of these should happen to get out of balance, however, it could cause a problem in the entire body and depending on where the imbalance occurred, it could affect a specific area of the body. This is really the essence of yin and yang, the two forces which regulate almost everything within the human body.

Acupuncture Is Safe

Many people are nervous about going to the acupuncturist but, as a matter of fact, it is actually one of the safest forms of medical treatment that there is. In fact, there are very few problems that can occur as long as a few safety guidelines are followed by a doctor. This would include such things as only using prepackaged, sterile needles and, of course, understanding what they are doing so that the needles are inserted in the proper areas.

Although it has not been totally embraced by all areas of the medical community, acupuncture is actually a relatively safe way for you to enhance your health through the use of natural medicine. Some of the studies that have been done on acupuncture actually show that it does contain some benefit and that it causes certain changes in a person's physiology that may help them in the healing process.

So, if you're having a difficult time with any number of things physically, acupuncture may be able to help you to get back on the road to better health. Even though it is not a total replacement for traditional medicine, it can still enhance your ability to live a healthy life.

Acupressure

Acupressure is another related ancient healing tradition that uses the fingers to press key points on the surface of the skin to stimulate the body's natural self-curative abilities. When these points are pressed, they release muscular tension and promote the circulation of blood and the body's life force to aid healing. Acupuncture and acupressure use the same points, but acupuncture employs needles, while acupressure uses the gentle but firm pressure of hands (and even feet). There is a massive amount of scientific data that demonstrates why and how acupuncture is effective. But acupressure, the older of the two traditions, was neglected after the Chinese developed more technological methods for stimulating points with needles and electricity. Acupressure, however, continues to be the most effective method for self-treatment of tension-related ailments by using the power and sensitivity of the human hand.

There are hundreds of thousands of individuals within the United States and elsewhere who have seemed to embrace the idea and practice of acupuncture as something that is real and can be used to treat a wide variety of issues.

On the other hand there are hundreds of thousands of other people who are on the exact opposite side of the fence. Some people believe the idea of acupuncture is a myth, while others know to the core of their being that acupuncture therapy is real, not imagined. Whatever the case in your belief system, though, chances are that you have at least heard of the acupuncture myth controversy that some people have started in the United States and throughout the world.

Why Acupuncture is Considered a Myth

Many people consider acupuncture to be a myth because there are already so many myths in the Chinese culture that have not yet been debunked. In addition to that, many people logically process the thought that just because the Chinese considered the acupuncture therapy to be real thousands of years ago does not mean that the traditions were carried on and the effects were real. For many, the idea of acupuncture leads to imagery of ancient Chinese people concocting special recipes that only serve as to buffer the whole myth of acupuncture therapy. Some people say that these people simply don't know what they're talking about. Acupuncture professionals in the Chinese culture have rejected those who say that acupuncture therapy is a total myth.

Why Acupuncture is Considered Very Real

Professional and authoritative Chinese experts in Asia as well as other countries throughout the world reject the idea that the whole concept of acupuncture therapy is a myth. Their main reason for believing acupuncture is a legitimate treatment process is the fact that these acupuncture experts have actually experienced the healing properties of the process of acupuncture. There are acupuncture schools in China that teach and promote acupuncture treatments for dozens of maladies. There are acupuncture clinics and treatment centers that supposedly can cure back pain to helping you lose weight to chiropractic uses to even acupuncture massages. For these people, they are confident by the fact that they are able to heal through this very delicate process and are confused as to why anybody would doubt the whole miracle!

Where Is the Answer?

We have heard arguments for the myth side of acupuncture and we have also heard arguments for the reasoning behind believing in acupuncture, but is there any middle ground? Is it possible that there could be some myths associated with the medicine techniques, but most of the acupuncture therapy is actually a real thing? On the contrary, though, there can hardly be any middle ground to something or some idea that is either false or true. Many acupuncture defenders contend that their way of healing is the absolute right way and they also say that if one is to be too skeptical about the whole issue then the best thing to do would be to try it out for themselves! Indeed, personal experience is what is most important, and the issue of acupuncture certainly warrants the experience!

We plan to get to the bottom of this contentiouis issue, so we'll have more on this interesting subject in future posts! If any of you readers have any thoughts on this topic, please feel free to chime in!
